In 1994, Ryōanji was among the cultural sites meeting the UNESCO World Heritage Site qualifications, and was listed as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. Recognised as a merit to the mankind and worthy of conservation, thus its irrefutable value was internationally acclaimed.
